Faculty RECR Education
For proposals submitted to NSF on or after July 31, 2023, all researchers, including faculty, post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students, and other senior personnel named on proposals to NSF must complete RECR education before engaging in research projects sponsored by the Foundation.
Beginning Spring Semester 2024, faculty with new NSF awards will be required to complete the following training within 60 days of the start of the award. This program is tentative at present. It is being designed to (i) education new faculty on key topics in the research and scholarship enterprise that MSU views as important, (ii) meet all federal requirements and guidelines for training and education content, and (iii) provide individuals with up-to-date information on federal policies and key issues of integrity in research, scholarship, and creative activity.
Initially, only faculty with new NSF awards are required to complete the following CITI - Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative modules in the MSU Faculty RCR Program:
- Introduction to RCR (RCR-Basic) - ID: 17009
- Mentoring and Healthy Research Environments (RCR-Basic) - ID: 20983
- Authorship (RCR-Basic) - ID: 16597
- Plagiarism (RCR-Basic) - ID: 15156
- Data Management (RCR-Basic) - ID: 20896
- Research Misconduct (RCR-Basic) - ID: 16604
Starting in the Summer of 2024, three instructor-led (1-h) discussions will be offered on the following topics:
- Mentoring and Mentor-Mentee Relationships,
- Research Misconduct and Detrimental Research Practices, and
- Research Collaborations and Potential Security Threats.
Starting in Fall Semester of 2024, RECR education will be required for all new faculty. The required education program consists of two components: (i) online CITI training modules and (ii) instructor-led (in person and or synchronous virtual) discussions.
The philosophy is that the online training modules function as a baseline on foundational topics with the instructor-led sessions building upon this foundation and serving as a mechanism for (i) keeping all up to date on current federal policies, (ii) learning about best practices in research and scholarship integrity matters through case studies, and (iii) providing guidance on ethical decision-making. The instructor-led sessions also provide an opportunity to address questions and concerns participants may have.
